Synopsis This deceptively simple tale relates the activities of seven English children played by adults on a summer afternoon during World War II. In a woods, a field and a barn, they play, fight, fantasize and swagger. Their aggressions, fears, hostilities and rivalries are a microcosm of adult interaction. Easy going Willie tags along as burly Peter bullies Raymond and is challenged by fair minded Paul. Plain Audrey is overshadowed by Angela's prettiness and wreaks her anger on the boys. All of them gang up on the terrified "Donald Duck" who, abused by his mother and ridiculed by his peers, plays a dangerous game of pyromania with tragic results.

Cast Details

The play has seven characters, 5m 2f. All seven year olds played by adults!

The author, Dennis Potter,in his introduction to the play, writes about his dislike of child actors and very deliberately states that it is in the movement not the voice that the idea of 'children' is conveyed. The play demands a lot of physical activity with almost constant movement including fights, running, climbing and one character standing on his head! In their play and interactions we learn a lot about their family circumstances. The play is set in the West Country during the second world war. We will have help with the accents!

Note that there are no age limits for auditioning!
